About the Project
Shape is a mobile app designed to assist individuals of all fitness levels in achieving their weight loss goals from the comfort of their homes, without the need for any equipment. It provides personalized workout routines tailored to each user's needs and preferences.
The company that will publish this app is a startup. Therefore, I designed all my designs in a way that would not make the developers' job difficult. I followed Human Interface Guidelines and Material Design in every stage of my design process.

Designed for
App Store & Play Store
Goal: One App for Essential Fitness Needs
The objective is straightforward: to revolutionize fitness industry by providing a user-friendly virtual coaching platform. Shape aims to redefine the user experience, address real-life challenges with an innovative and transformative approach.
The Problem
In the saturated market of fitness apps, several common pitfalls exist that hinder user satisfaction and reduce the effectiveness of these platforms.
1
Unnecessary Content
Users are presented with a lot of unnecessary content by the apps on the market. Users often find themselves lost in a maze of menus and options, struggling to find what they need in the clutter. This complexity detracts from the app's intended purpose of helping users improve their fitness and health.
2
Insufficient Information
Many fitness apps offer generic workout routines. Most of the apps that claim to be personalized group users according to a certain range and provide the same workout plans. Users cannot observe how personalized their plans are and at what level they are.
3
Limited Accessibility
Many fitness apps pose a challenge for users who prefer home workouts or lack access to gym facilities due to their requirement for specific equipment. Users are not offered variations or if they are, the instructions and implementations is not clear.
The Solution
To address these issues, my approach involves designing an intuitive interface. By prioritizing user-friendly features and seamless navigation, I aim to produce the best possible fitness experience for everyone.
1
Building a clean & user friendly interface
In order to reinforce users' commitment to their personal plans, on-demand workouts will not be included in the application. They will be offered only the personalized fitness plans they need.
2
Properly informing users at the right time
A training plan will be created for users as if they were working with a personal trainer. User levels will be constantly updated with the feedback received from the users at the necessary points and their needs will be answered in the most accurate way.
3
Allowing users to easily perform changes
I will present the workouts, which include exercises that can be done anywhere and without equipment, to the user in a workout session that users can easily manage and follow. Users should also be offered alternatives when they are faced with exercises that are not suitable for them, and they should be able to make this change easily.
The Challenge
There are many applications on the market that have many features and have been dominating the markets for years. It is not easy for a new application to gain a place among these applications and to rise to the top in the market. That's why it is very important to create a very clean and understandable application design that can appeal to everyone. I tried to design an application that is free from all confusion, has a clear purpose and clear instructions.
Competitor Analysis
I conducted a comprehensive competitor analysis to understand industry standards, identify trends, and find opportunities for differentiation. This guided my design decisions, helping me enhance functionality, improve user satisfaction, and strategically position our product.

I conducted a survey with 30 people who had at least one experience with weight loss fitness apps or were currently using one to systematically gather data on user behaviors, preferences, and patterns at scale. This provided a more comprehensive understanding of user needs & behaviors and helped me make data-driven decisions.

Users appreciate apps that allow them to customize their workout plans according to their preferences and fitness levels.
Variety and Engagement:
Providing a diverse range of exercise routines and keeping users engaged with fresh content can prevent boredom and improve adherence to fitness goals.
User Experience Matters:
A user-friendly interface, intuitive navigation, and seamless syncing across devices contribute to a positive user experience.
Progress Tracking and Support:
Effective progress tracking features, reminders, notifications, and access to expert advice or coaching can enhance user motivation and accountability.
Empathy Map
I have created an empathy map to gain a deeper understanding of the user's thoughts, feelings, and pain points. By this way, I can create user-centered designs that meet the user's needs and provide a better user experience.
Goals
To achieve and maintain a healthy weight
To improve overall physical and mental well-being
To enhance self-confidence and self-esteem.
Pain Points
Difficulty sticking to an exercise plan
Feeling overwhelmed by the abundance of information and options available
Struggling to find the motivation and accountability needed to achieve their weight loss goals
Emotions
Frustration when they don't see the results they want
Disappointment when they slip up or fall off track
Self-doubt and uncertainty when they feel like they're not making progress
Fear of failure and fear of not being good enough
Needs
A personalized and tailored approach to weight loss
A simple and easy-to-use interface that allows them to track their progress and stay motivated
Regular progress updates and feedback to help them stay on track
Defining MVP
I have created an empathy map to gain a deeper understanding of the user's thoughts, feelings, and pain points. By this way, I can create user-centered designs that meet the user's needs and provide a better user experience.
Identify the target audience
The users of Shape App will be people who want to lose weight at home with no equipment. Potential users have no age, gender or fitness level limits. So, all interface should be designed for a wide variety of people. It should be easy to use, the instructions should be clear, and the activities to be done should be obvious.
Determine the core features
Personalized workouts: the app can provide users with personalized workout plans based on their fitness goals and preferences.
Regular level update: Allowing users to see their progress over time and adjust their level accordingly.
Progress tracking: the app can track users' progress over time, providing them with a sense of accomplishment and motivation.
Prioritize the features
All the core features and the rest of the features that the app will include will be prioritized based on their importance and the value they will provide to the users. This way, the usage of the app will be very easy and clean.
Test and iterate
Once the app is published, we’ll imply different A/B test to find the best version of the features by gathering feedback from the users. We’ll use this feedback to iterate and improve the app, adding new features and functionality as needed.
What’s Changed & Eliminated
Before moving on to shiny and polished designs, I'm reflecting on the evolution of my design and the decisions I've made along the way.
Throughout the design process, I've made several changes to refine my initial concept. I've had to let go of certain elements or ideas that weren't feasible within the project's constraints. These adjustments ranged from simplifying complex features for clarity to removing unnecessary elements to streamline the user experience.
Quiz Layout
The first design I made was visually more appealing but there was also more disturbance on the screen. The final design is something iOS & Android users are more used to, more simplistic and easier to navigate. The page title clearly identifies the task in a single word and the question is also present in the list title, which is not very emphasized as it is in the first design, to be more descriptive.
Moreover, the final design was a more preferable product in terms of the workload on developers.

Workout Session
In the old design, users could view how many seconds the current exercise would take from the timer at the top and also from the progressive blue color in the background of the controls. I gave up on this solution because this visually appealing design conveyed the same information to the user in two different ways. In the new design, users only see how many seconds the exercise will take from the timer.
In the old design, the progress bar showing the total training time was positioned at the top. Since this is a bit of a vague indicator, in the new design I placed this bar above the exercise duration and broke it up into pieces to highlight how many exercises are left & those completed. In this way, we obtained a more informative result.
The results of the new design on different screen sizes were much better. We have also obtained the correct areas to display the total time as a timer and place the calories burned. As a result, we achieved a more understandable and efficient design.

What makes a designer happier than the useful designs that emerge after a long process? Here is the final designs of Shape iOS.
Conclusion
Every phase of this project from researching to designing, iterating ideas to bring this project to life was a rewarding experience with all of its challenges. Learned many things along the way and created a product that prioritizes user experience in every page of the app.
